Two primary methods exist to create felt: wet felting and needle felting. Each method has its unique charm and applications, contributing to the versatility of felt products.

Wet Felting:

The Traditional Art of Wet felting is an ancient technique that uses water, soap, and agitation to bind wool fibers together. Here’s a step-by-step guide to the wet felting process:

1. Preparation of Wool: High-quality New Zealand wool is selected for its softness and durability. The wool is cleaned and carded to align the fibers.

2. Layering the Wool: Wool is layered in the desired shape and size, often using a template to guide the process.

3. Applying Water and Soap: Warm, soapy water is applied to the wool layers. The soap helps to open up the wool fibers, making them more pliable.

4. Agitation and Rolling: The wool is gently agitated and rolled, causing the fibers to entangle and bind together. This step requires patience and precision to ensure even felting.

4. Rinsing and Shaping: Once the wool has felted sufficiently, it is rinsed to remove soap residues. The felt is then shaped and left to dry, resulting in a sturdy, cohesive piece.

Needle Felting:

1. Preparation of Wool: Like wet felting, high-quality New Zealand wool is prepared by cleaning and carding.

2. Creating the Base Shape: Wool is shaped into a rough form of the desired object, whether it’s an animal figure, decorative item, or accessory.

3. Felting with Needles: Barbed needles are repeatedly poked into the wool, causing the fibers to tangle and compact. This step requires precision and skill to achieve the desired level of detail.

4. Adding Details: Additional wool can be added and felted to create details, textures, and features. The process is repeated until the desired design is achieved.

5. Finishing Touches: The finished product is carefully inspected, and any loose fibers are secured. The result is a beautifully detailed felt item with a unique charm.
